The fastest growing alternative is online learning, increasing the number of students at 20% per year during the past five years. In addition to totally virtual schools (search this site for additional background info) more and more conventional school districts are using online learning courses to augment their offerings. An excellent 11 minute video segment from Edutopia (George Lucas Education Foundation) provides a look at how that works in various settings. The Southern Region Education Board has an excellent report, State Virtual Schools–Successes and Growing Pains, about their state’s various programs.
